Flaxseeds have been found to be effective in reducing mild menopausal symptoms, according to the results of a recent study. Canadian researchers put menopausal women with high cholesterol levels on a four-month diet. Afterward, the subjects were randomly assigned to either add 40 grams a day of crushed flaxseed to their diet, or take 0.625 mg. of conjugated equine estrogens daily. Some in the latter group took the estrogen alone, while others took it combined with 100 mg. of micronized progesterone. After two months of treatment, both groups continued the diet alone for two months before crossing over to the alternate treatment for two more months. The flaxseeds were as effective as oral estrogen-progesterone in reducing menopausal symptoms and lowering glucose and insulin levels.
