CLA Decreases Inflammation in Cartilage Cells

Arthritis affects many aging bodybuilders.  It involves progressive deterioration of cartilage covering the bones and the synovial membranes lining the joints.  Inflammation caused by injury or improper training techniques (cheating on lifts, unbalanced development of muscles that causes increased joint stress) breaks down the cartilage resulting in an imbalance between anabolic repair and catabolic breakdown.  High levels of prostaglandins and nitric oxide contribute to cartilage breakdown.  Texas Tech University researchers found that conjugated linoleic acid supplements (alone or in combination with fish oil) reduced prostaglandins and nitric oxide levels, which suggests they may help prevent cartilage deterioration.  (Lipids, 39: 161-166, 2004)
